And, of course you realize that if the orchids you bought to take for judging win anything, you'll have to pay for registering the award as well, right? At the rate you guys buy orchids, the AOS may want to set up an automatic debit system for the fees.

Yes. it sure can get to be an expensive hobby pretty fast. Although since I get most of mine as smaller plants and grow them up, that saves me a lot. They have taken over my sunroom area though!

    Good luck at judging!

Very good idea on the direct debit system Kathi, almost quite applicable im sure not that far from the truth. From the last few posts I can really find it easy to admire members styles/ motives esp. Meg with the sacrifice of warmth and comfort tolerating a cold draft at night to inspire the phrag to spike, such committment, and Maura s hubby Phil.C - that chemical in our brain with the compulsion for more and more. How very very true. Especially true with that chemical - sure its' dopamine' a chemical released by our brain whenever we gain or achieve an additional 'fix' applicable to our hobby ie another plant. A computer /video game company took hold of this with their product using 'brain training' to keep us stimulated and alert. We as 'addicts' desire more (orchids) inorder to benefit from that 'feeling of overwhelming satisfaction, pleasure and delight as the chemical is released on cue as our senses immediately respond to our action of acquiring further acquisitions. Addicts are crafty and caniving, mischievious and devious - to reflect this look at the way we always find room for another, find some extra money or atleast substitute for lack of that with trading/ swapping. What was the previous year, a joyful significant moment at scoring that mature Catt AOS awarded plant will easily with no doubt be split in half because you want that laelia.

....the best thing about this, ive just sold my 40" lcd tv which hasnt been used for a while anyway. As a movie fan this was at one time fantastic.........but because its size comes into conflict situ wise it finally has to go. Why? fed up of it drying my mounted moisture loving orchids out to quickly due to the huge amount of heat caused. While its mandatory that they must dry out abit before another dunk or spray, it was just tooo quick and some plants are utilizing their storage reserves due to signs of slight dehydration. Thats another sacrifice! but ive got my pc monitor a quarter of the size.????????
