    Default New bag babies!

went down to one of the big home improvement chain stores to get soil for a tree fern about to walk out of it's pot, and noticed they had a new shipment of bag babies, I looked through and came out of there with a Shomburgkia tibicinis "purple", a Dendrobium spectibale, and an Encylia Prismatocarpa. they also had a few other nice ones, I may go back tomorrow for an absolutely massive Onc. "sweet sugar", the last one I got for $4 on clearance as a bag baby last year and it nearly died, this one looks nice and healthy and has 6" pseudobulbs and is super healthy looking. I'm super stoked, mainly because they had some awesome SPECIES orchids in bags now, and the S. Tibicinis apparently gets huge, I feel great and just wanted to share my finds with you all, I hit gold today and so I advise everyone to keep their eyes open because chain hardware stores are starting to get in some good stuff, at least around here.

    Wonderful selection of species.
I read an article several years ago about the president of the company where all the bagged orchids come from. He mentioned he was going to try and make possible for the average home owner, orchid species. He mentioned L. tenebrosa as one candidate.
    Anyway, great find!

Hey Danny, it would be interesting if you filled in a few details in your profile so that we know where "around here" is !
Around were I am, bag babies does not mean a thing.

Well, I did run to my big box store at lunch, and found no new species orchids (darn!).

In fact, the only bag babies (Geoff--potted orchids in packaged in net bags with a header card) they had were small catts on clearance. They were in good shape though, so two followed me home. Both are nice varieties (C. Caudebec 'Carmela' AM/AOS, and LC Schilleriana var coerulea 'Paradise Blue', so I bought them for $3 each, even though I am sure they are several years away from blooming.

I had one of those blue cattleya orchids follow me home too! and bag babies are, as previously stated, bag babies are orchids in 3 or 4 inch pots, in a plastic humidity bag and a header card. The thing I'm happy about is these are species orchids and not the hybrids, since somethimes the name on the bag and the name on the tag in the pot don't match up and you end up with a hybrid (nothing wrong with that, but if you expect, say, Den. aggregatum and get a lookalike hybrid, it could be a letdown) also, I will post my details but for the purpose of this thread, I live in Surry county, North Carolina, USA.
