Default Sophronitis Coccinea - What is the best growing medium/method?

    Hi All,

June 2011, I purchased several of the above, they were potted in sphagnum moss.

I'm not a lover of sphagnum and to date I've not developed an understanding of how to use it as a growing medium. I'm much more comfortable using bark.

Given my discomfort with sphagnum and rather than re-potting into bark, I mounted the Soph. onto cork about 4 months ago: then overlayed it with a bit of moss, and then gutter guard and tied with bonsai wire to ensure that the orchid was firmly held in place.

The mount is subject to the open weather, receives light filtered by overhanging trees and receives good air flow. To date, the Soph. is growing well.

As I have purchased several more Sophs, is then any other methods that I should consider.

Photo attached of the mounted sophronitis.

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    George

I don't grow this particular orchid, but if I did, I would grow it in a bark mix as it would get too dry in my grow area. Looking for others response to this question...

    cheers,
    BD

This one looks a bit dehydrated to me, I would also consider potting it up. If you want to, you do not need to remove it from the mount. You can just place the entire mount, in a basket or a pot with many holes on the sides and fill it with bark.

Looks okay to me. Increase the humidity with good air movement and be patient. I grow mine under intermediate condition(not warmer than 85F), slightly cooler in winter is even better.

PS, let it dry out slightly between waterings. I water mine(on mount) every other day unless it is a hot summer day.

    Tom,

    Thanks for your response.

I've just read your sophronitis thread of May last year: a lovely flower.

Do you have any other sophronitis, if so, are they all mounted, what type of mount and how do you mount the plant, and if in pots, type of potting mix.

Whew, that's a mouthful, thanks for your assistance in advance

    Kind Regards

    George
