    Question What kind of fertilizer?

I have 3 phals and 2 dends. I have never grown orchids before and bought some food. It is by Better-Gro. It is called Orchid Plus and is 20-14-13. Is this good food? Is it ok for both types of plants? Also how often should I feed them? Any input would be great!

I'm not the ultimate expert, but I follow the old maxim of fertilize weakly, weekly. So I use about 1/3 of the recommended amount, and feed one time each week - which can be every watering or every other watering depending on the plant. It's much better to be conservative, otherwise you can burn the roots. I don't know about that fertilizer, never heard of it before. I use Dyna-Gro, plus a time release 13-13-13 that I get at the home store (When I repot).

Good luck with your plants - remember the most common cause of death is too much attention!

I think the fertilizer you have should prove to be fine for your orchids and, yes, by all means use it for both the Phals & the Dends. I echo Diane's comments about using about 1/3 of the dose on the label. Indeed, I know people who use even less--perhaps 1/4 the dose. I'm not overly precise when I mix up my fertilizer, but it's usually between 1/4 & 1/3. (For plants I water 2X per week, I usually fertilize every second watering. For ones I water weekly, I usually fertilize every time. Every so often, though, I deliberately do not fertilize.)

Hi jooms, I don't know about the dends, as I don't have any, but for my phals I use a balance of 20-20-20 every two weeks, and they seem to like it.
