Ii had to go with a modest number myself...my plants are my friends. After a hectic day at work, coming home and giving them each individual attention is my prize for not stabbing anyone! No really, it's the best thing ever for me to get excited over every little 'triumph', be it new growth or spike. Some of those tiny joys would go away if I ever had my wish of unlimited funds and subsequently, a collection of orchids to rival any other. I love them most when they are offering me solace.

if i have unlimited cash,.. i'll buy all the ones i like, and i don't like (if it's just interesting, i'll also just take it). also buy whatever it takes... if i need to build 2nd floor, 3rd floor semi outdoor place in the available space i have, i'd do so,..,... including buying tress , tiny waterfall, everything else to re-create a tiny more paradise version of a rain forest,...

I went with 3-5. With limited space I'm being very selective. Of course I like the big cattleyas and schomburkias too. They can take up some real estate. That didn't stop me from buying 3 sizable plants from our speaker last evening.

This is one of the ways I have found to get more in my limited space.

Aww, the little thingy is absolutely adorable

I have "just" 50 orchids now and I'm afraid that's about my limit. Having to water them twice a week during summer, it gets slightly hectic, so I'm just glad it's my vacation now, otherwise it would've been pretty bad.
Plus, when it gets cold outside, I'll have to stuff them back into the flat somehow (they are getting tanned on the balconies now). B-)
I know that I have to stop at some point, but whenever I see some Onc. hybrids sold as "Cambrias" here, or Catts, or slippers... I just cannot stop. I keep thinking: "Just one more orchid and then I'll stop" ))))
The only realistic option I can think of is to get rid of the duplicates, which I keep buying "just in case". *giggle* The beloved dendrobium keikis will have to go soon enough too. :-\

It's nice to see so many "crazy" people here )) My family stopped admiring my "lovely" hobby after purchasing 10th phal. )) So now sometimes I have to sneak around with a new orchid, trying to bring it unnoticed, once even walked with a new Burrageara outside till it was dark. A few times I even had to cut the flower spikes and drag them into our flat in a bag Without flowers they all look the same to sane people

Ahem. So this is my limit - 50 orchids, shall I try not to increase this humble number. *angelic smile*
But... if I only could.. don't know, 100-200 at least, I say, but then I'd have to quit job and everything probably. Orchids still are the kewlest creatures on this planet. *wasn't me smiley*

You know, there a a boat load of mini orchids that take up little room. I should know I have 30 of them now! I keep them in converted fish tanks (made them into terrariums also called ochidariums). It helps keep the humidity in.

    Thanks for the tip
Unfortunately I'm not into tiny orchids, and they are quite difficult to obtain in my part of the universe
This is my tiniest - between a Cymbidium and Colmanara Jungle Monarch. I found it in a pot with a larger discounted cattleya. It doesn't look like a seedling, I just hope it survives, it lives in a humidity tray now, with some sphagnum moss on the top of the bark (it's crazily hot this month). I'm very curious what its normal size is.

Since I'm a mostly species snob, there is no way they will have more than 4 or 5 that would be of interest. Even that many is rare.

6-8 will be ideal for me. Every month there is a plant exhibit in one of the malls in our place. Usually I would get 6-8 orchids which I still don't have in my collection, depends actually. But if I had unlimited money and if the orchids that they have were new (the ones I don't have yet), I might buy them all.
