    Default I love my pots.

I have a thing decorative planters, and the only time I get rid of one is when I have to break it to get a plant out. Before I was just washing them with plan old detergent and water, now I think I'll do the bleach thing and look into some antifungals, etc. etc.

I guess I didn't realize that there is so many problems out there...the only thing I've ever noticed are little flies, those I spray for with Raid, and their in my dirt plants...I don't think I've ever had a disease in my orchids, so I never really thought about getting rid of my pots...maybe---if you don't know of problems, you don't have problems??? like, it only rains when you remember you forgot your umbrella...ok, I have an odd way of looking at live.

I don't use plastic only clay. Most of my plants are hanging either bareroot or in small baskets.

Come on now Tim , do you really think that your pots are covered with virus and fungus ? Even if you are right, the virus would be dead within a week - it lives in living cells, and can't live long out of them. As to fungus (spores) once they have landed on the pot I would think they are pretty harmless - the air is full of them anyway.
But having just said all that, as a matter of principle I wash them well - if all the old roots and compost are removed, plus any algae , they are as good as new in my opinion.
I once went to a lecture given by a very highly respected US paph breeder etc ( this was in UK) and he said that they throw all their pots away and never re-use. At question time, someone asked why - and suggested that the real reason was the cost of hiring labour to wash pots in New York - and he shamefacedly admitted that was true.

Once upon a time we all used clay pots , and when plastic pots came along we protested and said " you can't grow orchids in plastic"...
But clay pots need cleaning too - and it can be a bit more difficult if the dirt has got into th pores of the pot.

Not sure why, but I get a great sense of satisfaction from scrubbing the dickens out of a clay pot for reuse. Also, I sanitize them and then they sit in the sun on the gravel for a good while before reuse. I rarely need one immediately afterward because usally the plant that came out of it moved on to a bigger/different pot.

My best friend freaks out cause I just put the plastic pots to soak for a day or 2 in SA20 or bleach water, and very rarely do any hard core scrubbing. So far I have only used new clay pots for some of my orchids. For some reason I was having fungus problems in my area, with my phals, especially when I use plastic . Until I discovered that it was the mix so I had to make my own. I now have to water them more often, which I don't mind since there are only 14...right now...(another monthly sale coming up this weekend ).
