White vinegar is a good alternative to bleach and does the same job, and much kinder to the enviroment.

Acetic Acid (Vinegar) can alter the structure of clay pots if soaked too long. Initially, acids will liberate minerals such as magnesium and calcium that cause unsightly scale. If allowed to continue soaking, acids will break down the iron and aluminum silicates that form clay.

Thoroughly rinse clay pots after soaking in Vinegar. Don't soak any longer than necessary.

Thanks for that Suncoast, I did not know that. I do only use a small amount in water in a bucket and I do rince them well. Thanks again.

I scrub all my pots, clay or plastic. Then I throw them in the microwave and nuke for 60 seconds, on low. Microwaves will literally cook anything!

Scrub, and bleach. If I don't have any bleach, I boil them (only lost two pots so far).

I use clay for most of mine but have problems with a lot of chemicals including bleach. I put them in a preserve pot and boil them for 15 minutes.
