Hi Sand Tiger, how do? Just a thought, doesn't sitting water encourage mosquitoes? What you need are fish? Siamese fighters can do well in very little water, though if they are out on your balcony they might cook in the water if the sun hits it. Well there goes that thought.

Yeah, it does haha I'll put some bug zappers out there or something. Hell, I don't know...I'm not really even too assed about the humidity. I'm more worried about getting the light right.

Ooh ooh, Venus fly traps! I always wanted one of those. Heck I'm here fighting the mosquitoes myself. We've been having a fair amount of rain as of late and my area is humidity heaven. Plus, because this is old sugar cane land, the amount of moisture that is around here is higher than other places on the island. Great for orchids, not so great when it comes to the bugs.

How much flies in reality do they eat anyway ? Would they be a good dependable line of defense ?

Venus flytraps...I had one when I was like 8! It was my first plant.

And haha, a line of defense against bugs? Venus flytraps are hot messes...they're not really the beasts television likes to portray them as. They might catch a small bug or two a week if it happens to land on them, but if it's the wrong kind or if they trap it wrong...there goes the stem! Plus they're extremely small plants. I was so disappointed as a little boy when I got mine. I was like "This isn't what was in Little Shop of Horrors..."

lol so give up then and let the vermin take over ? Truthfully I don't have a big problem with mosquitos and flies like Dazed does . I have screens on all my windows and I don't keep my doors open , my windows however can always be open . Do you absolutely have to use ac where you are ? How does that affect your orchids ?

It gets warm in my apartment with no AC, but I leave the fan on them full blast...I can't afford to leave my AC on all day! Orchids or no orchids lol

Mosquitos are annoying, but my arch nemesis are crane flies and junebugs. I HATE them both with a fiery passion.

Can I pick your brain about something ? I have a den that I've had since last august . Being the first orchid I had it was roughed up a bit in my admitted ignorance . Now that I have more info available to me , I am trying to do better but he still bears the scars . It took a long while before it started to get new growth then when it finally did somehow water must have gotten into the crown and it started to rot . I subsequently removed that growth and a new one came up a lot faster this time , (yeah right )?. Now this one was looking good and growing well but it's kinda paused in these last few weeks and one of the leaves got this weird watery brown spot so I cut it off and placed some cinnamon on the cut , now tonight I go in to look at them and it has another brown watery spot on another leaf .
Well ...anyway , I was reading the physan bottle and I have my plants inside and don't want to use that on them , (I don't think ) , can you recommend something ? Or tell me , have you had this or anything like it happen to you ?
