Except that most of these dyed phals are purchased as disposable commodities, anyway. Once the flowers are gone, so are the plants. So most people will never know the difference and will just enjoy it while they have it.

I'm always sad when someone looks at my plants that aren't in bloom and ask "is it dead?" Does it look dead??? It's still green! Most people don't understand that orchids will rebloom eventually, so you're right Patty, most people will simply throw out the plant once the blooms fall because they simply don't know any better. Or they get tired of waiting for months with no new spikes. Maybe I've become an orchid elitist, but sometimes I feel like orchids at big box stores should either come with more info on the life cycle of an orchid, or orchids should only be available at nurseries and specialty growers. Then again, I suppose I never would have found a love for them if I hadn't bought my first at a big box store!

We can't afford to be doing that here, orchids are too expensive to pull a stunt like that. Probably why I've never seen one personally, Bajan's would put that dealer out of business in a one, using colourful language all the way. And I'd be up front and centre leading the mob!

I think that's how a lot of us got hooked. I appreciate that I can sometimes find some really nice orchids at a local store for an affordable price. Living in the middle of the desert, we take what we can get.

I can't understand why people would believe a plant is worthless once blooming is over. Many plants bloom only once a year! I know of very few that are constantly in bloom, all year, year after year. Nice thread, by the way.

It's like any other outdoor plant/bush/perennial flower. People don't dig them up once they're done flowering, but they don't seem to understand the same applies to orchids! smh

Well that's why God put the gardener gene in all of us OT'ers, so we can save the down trodden and abused orchids ...and any other plant for that matter, from the people that don't know any better.

I'm not saving a damned Phal. Ain't got the time, ain't got the room, ain't got the care. Phals. (bless their hearts) are so over exposed and mass produced that they've practically lost any sense of exotic-ness they once held. I look at them the same way I look at Marigolds or Daffodils, and that's a shame. Now, if I BUY a Phal. (I have one), I certainly don't trash it. But I don't feel any guilt by passing up the pathetic things in big box stores. You can't be anything other than purple or white? You should be ashamed of yourself. You don't DESERVE to be saved. My Vanda would eat you for lunch and clean its teeth with your roots.
