Default What to do about heat?

My Vandas, Cattleyas and a Dendrobium are all on my balcony to summer outdoors, but for the next week or so the heat is going to be from 100-109 degrees. They're used to the 90 degree range at this point, but I don't know about the 100's...I'm debating on if I should put them inside (which I really don't want to do, as I want them to get all they can from summering outside). I have a box fan blowing on them on low at all times...maybe kicking it up to medium would help? I'm not sure what I should do.

Get another hobby besides orchids, you are fidgeting too much with them. The fan will keep them cool, just remember to keep the environment humid as the continuous fan will dry them out. A couple of days in the 100s will not do anything to your orchids. We have these temperatures for 3 months every year, it can affect the flowers though, it will reduce their lifespan.

I really don't think the heat will bother your vandas. I spent a couple years in Southeast Asia, thanks to Uncle Sam. That's where vandas come from and, I can tell you, it gets damn hot there. Cattleyas are another matter. Many cattleyas can take the heat without any problems but some come from the mountains of Central and South America. Those types of catts can suffer in the hot Texas summer. My suggestion is that you leave them alone, observe them and keep a journal about how they grow and flower. One of my favorite things to do is to sit on my patio and write notes in my orchid journal. Over the years you'll discover which orchids can tolerate your conditions and which ones can't. It takes patience to be an orchid grower. I sometimes struggle with an orchid for three or four years before I realize it doesn't like South Florida and then I get rid of it. Good luck.

Thats good to know, when you plan your next trip let me know, you could come to see my orchid collection and green house and shades. Were your trips work related ?

Yes, all three times were work related. I tend to get all the India trips when they come up because I enjoy going. I will certainly let you know the next time I am there. The only problem is I never know where in India I will be, it is based on where the client is located.

Mine did OK in the 100's last summer. I think with the fan, yours should be fine.

It's not really fidgeting too much if I'm making sure my entire collection isn't wiped out from a week of smoldering temperatures, is it?
