Default Do you get stressed over ugly plants?

Just a bit of curiosity. Do you hate it when your plants get ugly leaves or look a bit mangled like many do growing out in the wild? Or do you not care as long as you get good flowers? I really baby my plants, and I want the leaves to look just as pretty as the flowers...I hate it when any leaves get scorched or fall off or yellow. I'm pretty OCD about it. I'm not real big on the "au naturale" look myself. Wild orchids aren't the prettiest things when they're out of bloom to me.

I think *most* orchids look a bit dull when out of bloom. That is why I like some of my slipper orchids with interesting leaves and my ludisia discolor (jewel orchid) - they look good out of bloom.

    cheers,

I'm picky about the look of the plant out of bloom as well. I'm constantly preening the leaves to make sure they always look their best. With the exception of my newest addition which came to me with a few damaged leaves but healthy overall. I didn't want to remove all the bent and brown bits or it wouldn't really have any leaves left! I'm hoping them just naturally shed soon

I used to be very concerned about the condition of the leaves but not any more except for the vandas - those that lose the older leaves and make the plant looking like a feather duster. These plants look downright ugly!

Nope, not me, a plant is a plant and like people, they are not all beautiful on the outside so I have to give them an apportunity to reveal their true character. And those plants with blemished leaves eventually reward me with beautiful flowers just like those less than pretty on the outside people end up being the most incredibly beautiful people I know. - martha

Hmm... I admit I struggle to let go and accepting that my orchids are living beings, where there's no such thing as pure perfection. It's really hard for me, I secretly want them to be all in the right shade of green, with juicy fleshy leaves and healthy roots along thousands of blooms. But everytime my hands want to mingle too much I bite my lips, step back and let that yellow leaf or whatever it is stays

Yes! Those are exactly what I had in mind when I wrote this. Those bare stems are just awful. haha On the other end of the spectrum, a big full-leaved Vanda is one of the most beautiful orchids even when out of bloom.

    Martha - I like that a lot.

I really like my Rossioglossum Rawdon Jester. It's leaves look like seaweed! they're very thick, wavy and stout instead of those long tattered grassy leaves that most Oncids. have.

it used to bother me. orchids plants can be downright ugly out of flower. some anyway, like old dendrobiums with bare canes, i avoid because of it. and i have a very leggy mokara, which is overdue for a trimming. every couple years i cut the top off and replant it into bark mix so it does not look so leggy. i have to admit, the whole mass of roots you get from many vandas is unappealing. mostly my orchids are in my dining, living, or bedroom area or the balcony, and i have a small growing space, so they are on display, so it can be frustrating. i try to place things so they block some of the more unsightly plants. eventually i am getting used to it and not stressing over it.

When I had a dendro I hated how it looked like a pot full of sticks! ....then it died
