Nicole, I have a dark side! Now today I found a damn catipillar eating the buds. At least one I think will not open at all, two others may open mangled. there is a smaller spike with no damage. The flowers look like they are going to be purple!

I have a small dark side myself and sense of humor 'sometimes' . I think we all do . Now at first I would have said kill the caterpillar but nowadays ............ ... I'm trying to be more understanding so I would suggest that you nicely take him off and toss him in the bushes outside or something . That's what I do nowadays , however it's not quite what I did to one that had eaten my newest rose bud before it could open . So when do we get to see these new happenings ?

I had a grasshopper eat an entire brand new leaf off of a Vanda that was working on growing it for 2 months. I almost had an aneurism.

Today, I was working in the greenhouse (spraying with malathion actually) and I noticed several leaves on the vanda by the door that were chewed up. As I continued around the greenhouse - I found the grasshopper who did it. He was snacking on my Neostylis. I gave him a big drink of malathion to go with his lunch. That sucker was almost three inches long. No telling how long he had been eating at my orchids.

    cheers,
    BD

Way to go Bruce , join us on the dark side ....... I simply haven't got any patience for any bugs that destroy my orchids ........well any of my plants really . Recently I didn't kill these caterpillar like bugs that swarm my lady in the night plant but that was only because I saw some ladybugs and I didn't want to kill them and they also took care of the pest for me but make no mistake , if the ladybugs were laying down on the job it would have been a different story .

I usually just remove larger pests (like that grasshopper) to out side, but it is like a plague here this summer. I was walking from my office at the university to my truck and was pelted in the face several times by the swarming grasshoppers. I literally had to cover my eyes for fear of getting an eye put out.

I'm uncertain how that one got into the greenhouse - I guessing he came in on my clothes as I always clear the area around the door before opening the door to the greenhouse. Well, at least that one will not be making a snack of my orchids anymore.

    cheers,
    BD

Just got back from San Antonio to see this thread has been busy! I did not kill the caterpillar I just took him off and dropped him on the deck, to be honest I think he came on the plant. Anyway, I have tons of anoles and spiders on my deck so I am sure he will not last long! I will take pictures of the buds if any seem like they will survive the assault!

Sorry about the caterpillar. Purple flowers? So maybe it really is a Zyg. I hope the pests stay away and let you see what you have.
