Thanks, the flowers (buds) definitely are purple unless when they unfold they become a lighter shade of something else. I have the younger spike with no damage so If I can keep the bugs at bay we will have the mystery closer to being solved.

I had three spikes, one I broke! The second longest was infested caterpillars that were eating each and every bud from the inside out. I have one spike left with some nice buds so hoping they open soon to solve the mystery!

Looks like a beautiful Acacallis cyanea hybrid. They are close relatives of Zygos.

Great, glad to have a name for it. It looks like a Acacallis cyanea x Zygopetalum based on the information you provided and what I found online. Thanks again Amey for the ID.

    You finally have flowers!!!

From what I can see in the pics, it looks like maybe it could be Zygonisia Cynosure?

Yes Amey is right. It is Acacalis cynea (or hybrid). Mine is flowering at the moment, but your blooms are far superior, which leads me to believe that it is probably a cross ith a Zygo.

You all lost me once you started getting more exotic than Zygos...LOL...sometimes I think you're all speaking some secret language...someday I hope to be "in the club" too! He hee! Anyway, I've been following the thread, and I'm glad to see such beautiful blooms on that plant! What a great find!

    Way to go!!
