    Default Orchid Growth Trends

Just a quick Question about what's going on, maybe the experienced growers can help, as this is my first year of 'summering' my orchids. June, July and the first week in August I experienced excellent growing. New roots, shoots and even some spikes on my phals, Catts, Oncidiums, Paph, and Vandas...As of last week, everything seems to have ceased. The roots aren't growing any longer, the shoots seemed to have stopped or at least slowed considerably. The only thing moving is the spike on my Vanda. What's going on?? Is this normal??

I have noticed the same thing happening to my orchids as well and this surge in growth coincides with the hot rainy monsoon period in our area. I believe this is the natural cycle of growth in the areas where most of our orchids are found. From mid-Nov to around March will be the cooler dry season (winter?)in the monsoon lands and the time when most vegetative growth has stopped, and for the deciduous types (certain dendrobiums) to shed their leaves. This is the 'dormant' period in preparation for the 'spring' blooms.

It all depends on the night time temperatures anything between 22-26 oC is fine any higher or lower and it will affect the carbon fixation and night and thus the growth.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere the days are also getting shorter along with the cooler nights. - martha

Mine are still throwing out growths and roots like a bunch of idiots on steroids. Spikes? That's another story...I scornfully look at them all and tell them "you have one job, and you can't even do that." and threaten them that they will be replaced by Pansies and Merigolds quicker than they can say "NO WAIT!" this fall.

Kelly, threaten them, really! No wonder, you're supposed to treat them like a lover, sweet talk, good food, loving care, soft caresses ... and then you get your just rewards. Threats gets you snubs, you have much to learn young 'un. - martha

I wouldn't even treat a lover like that. "oh...we're done? Alright, go home. I have to watch The Golden Girls."

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I just show mine the photos people post here. Its a wonder I haven't been threatened with a move to Shady Pines for handing my phone over to a plant just so it could have a good look! It MUST be great entertainment for the neighbors at least.
