    Default Out of Country Shipments

I am seriously cinsidering purchasing an orchid that I have been looking for from a seller in Malaysia. Has anyone in US purchased from out of the country and have the plants arrived to you? I am not concerned about the seller shipping it but the plant getting to me through US customs? It isn't that much money but a buck is a buck ---cost would be under $15 US. Have never done a transaction like this before and was curious if any of you have and if the results were successful. Thanks for any help/advice in advance.

I am glad you are asking this question because I have similar question too.

I will be visiting Borneo in 2 months. It would be great if I could bring back some orchids. Do seedpods follow same or similar rules from plants? I know that I need to buy from someone who has CITES permit, but that's all I know.

You need an import permit, a phytosanitary certificate (not applicable for flasks) and a cities certificate if it is a species.

Sometimes the vendor will process all necessary documents and tack it on to the shipping. I've purchased several times that way.

in Malaysia, they are many nurseries, which can issue all documents (CITES and phytosanitary), but not for Paphiopedilum.

I have ordered from overseas. The only thing is to make sure and properly soak them when you receive them as they will be pretty dried out. But so far i've had no problems ordering from overseas nurseries.

Amey, If the vendor takes care if it on his end...cities and such, then all is good in the U.S.

Cathy usually the vendor cannot get an import permit for you, It must be a person in the US, a person from south-east Asia cannot have an import permit for US, he can only have an export permit. But I think the laws in US are relaxed, and I think you may not be needing an import permit for small consignments.
