I buy any that I'm drawn too, the ones that intrigue me, the ones that "call my name".

I just never understood the whole snob thing about species orchids. It just never made any sense to me. The problem is, I know good and well that if I put up pictures of 5 flowering orchid plants, same genus, unless you know beforehand that one or another of them is a species, you'd never be able to tell the difference. No possible way in the world. So snobbery over something that isn't discernable just strikes me as somewhat ridiculous. Not like snobbery over a particular brand of well-made shoe, for example, compared to something shoddy. That, at least, I can understand the motivation for.
So for me, if I like the plant, if I like the flower, I'll buy it. (I do like to know the name of what I'm getting, though, species or whatever, so I'm not a particularly big fan of NOIDS.....). But species snobbery? Waste of mental time, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Gin, too. Species are easier to figure out than hybrids. Interesting poll.

can't say it's really intentional, but an overwhelming majority of my collection is species.
there are some hybrids i really enjoy, and i do have a couple...
if there were a vote for some shade between wannabe and bitsa, guess that's where i would fall....

I do like my species , mainly because they seem to be a bit more of a challenge to grow.
I doubt many of the artificially cultivated species would thrive if they were placed back into there natural habitat.
They may be species but they are still selectively bred to suit artificial culture/enviroment rather than being tough enough to combat natures rich platter of bugs/diseases & weather.
Oh yes i voted Bitsa

well, i've learnt something here today...
seems we have generally people who like it and so buy it... but of course this would be a really dull world if we didn't have the odd (meaning numbers not that they are weird.. errr) species lover.. though strangely no hybrid hoarder
thanks for all the input everyone.
cheers

I think species are awesome... I grow a few hybrids, but I think species are just alot tougher... I blame Weyman Bussey for getting started with species, when he gave me several plants a few years ago.
