Default Poll About Species

Well, there's been all sorts of polls and I just wanted to get a feel of how many of us like or even prefer species...

and then of course please explain

cheers
tim

oh yeah I vote that I am a wannabe species snob, I prefer to grow species because it makes me feel like I'm some kind of environmentalist helping to preserve the natural order of things... of course, I see orchids that I like and it turns out to be a hybrid and a get them anyways... so what the heart and the brain does are completely independent...

I love species I think they are easier to grow and bloom than ones with mixed up genetics . Once the culture is figured out .
I also like hybrids ... some of them ...there are some I have never figured out . Gin

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

See it, like it, buy it.

Well, that's just me. Some hybrids look better than species, and some species look better than hybrids. Depends.

Me 2! Me 2! I see it, I like it, I buy it, count me in!!

I don't see any point in growing a species that not only have untidy manner of growth, but flowers are so tiny I can hardly see them, blooms only once a year and last for only few days, worst, only few hours.

I grow things for their beauty and that I can enjoy them, not because they are rare and they are good collector items.

I try to stick to species, unless:

1. The hybrid is an interesting/distant/unlikely intergeneric, or
2. I know the parents of the hybrid and have a good idea of the particular look the breeder was going for (and it's an unusual and interesting direction), or
3. The hybrid is a good example of a type of plant I'd like to have one or two of (e.g. big white phal, vini paph, etc.)

Somehow, I still have more hybrids than species.

I would have thought I was a species snob but I counted and 6% of the plants are hybrids, mostly plants from when we first were getting into orchids (but even then we were wannabe species snobs). Though I have been getting rid of the hybrids... but iI am sentimental about some of them, and since they are old mature plants they put on a pretty impressive show.

Regards/ Karen
