Its a lovely thought that the size of plant we can buy in Europe may one day have grown so big as to need a huge pot. Thats a problem we may face quite happily, if ( what a big word that is !) it ever happens.
    Fat chance....
And since its Christmas day here in UK, a happy christas and a wonderful orchidaceous new year to all.

Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Geoff! I hope you get your specimen plant one day, I have a specimen Sharry Baby that I love. It was the first orchid I've ever rebloomed and it is huge now! It is now planted in the basket its pot was sitting in and is growing again like crazy. I don't think I will ever divide it.

I've grown them successfully rooted to live trees, don't think that helps you much. I grow my 'domesticated' ones in clay pots so I can keep them if I move/put them in safety in really bad weather.
Do you know what species are in your antelopes and phal types? There are mini species such as canaliculatum and carroni for the antelopes, compactum for the phals. I have had a specimen 25+ pbulb primary canaliculatum hybrid that topped off at maybe a foot in height; a single pbulb discolor keiki I bought last year is 3 feet tall and a primary hybrid of its is about the same though several pbulbs(the species can get over 3 yards, looking to see what spring growth brings o.O).
I have seen all those (mini) species being sold mounted.
I think the primary problem wiil be how top heavy the plants are, to have something sturdy enough not to tip and room enough to hang them. Culturally they should do fine, although since they don't like being disturbed you have the additional problem of finding something both heavy and durable.

Where did you get that mount? I remember my mom used to let her ivy's grow up those. I forgot all about them and they would make excellent mounts.

I ordered them via a orchid supply company. They are hard to come by in light of the endangered status of most of the tree ferns.

Richard Warren makes the lovely point that no orchid was ever found in the wild growing on tree fern, and every orchid in captivity will grow on it, happily.... It isn't quite true, either way, but there is a lot in what he says.

Most of my plants love tree fern. All the Phals are mounted on it and I finally think I can grow them because they are mounted.

Geoff, you are right, I've never been seeing any orchids groving on palm or fern tree, but it's a very common substratum for them. Not only in Europe.

I have always walked straight past palm tres - nothing of interest there... and only this year (!) leant that some species of catasetums grow on them exclusively.
I need a time machine, to turn the clock back, and go and do all my interesting journeys again !
