Default What is this Encyclia Tampensis doing?

I purchased this plant some time in October. It had what appeared to be a spike growing. Since then the 'spike' has grown longer, but no appearance of buds. Is this really a spike ? I have never seen anything like it before.
The plant is Enc. Tampensis alba 'Mendenhall'. I have several other Encs. and their spikes do not look like this.

If it is a mericlone, this shoot is most likely an effect of multiplication. This sometimes happens. The next shoot might be just normal.

I've seen a LOT of tampensis (pretty much all wild or wild collected), and I've never seen that! Doesn't look like anything that would be a normal part of a tampensis. It must be some sort of developmental error. I think I'd just remove it- don't think it will bloom even if it decides 'I'm a flower spike', bloom season for them is still 6 months away. (of course my digbyana bloomed this fall, so maybe it will 'decide' what the devil too...)
