    Default Tolumnia Jairak: Care

    Hello, everyone.

Two years ago, I bought three small Tolumnia Jairak Rainbow orchids, each a different color, and each in a 2" terracota pot. They were in bloom at the time I bought them, and sit on my kitchen windowsill. They receive direct morning sun and bright indirect light after 11am. They get watered twice a week because there is not much fir bark in the small pots, and overall look very healthy.

My problem is, they have not bloomed since I bought them. Am I doing something wrong?

i got one about a year and a half ago. air-mailed from france. bloomed in about 6 months, then again a few months later, but has not bloomed since then. in the meantime i bought a second tolumnia in bloom, it has not rebloomed either. the second is not doing as well, but the first grows lushly. morning sun, all day bright light. misting every morning almost. heavier watering once or twice a week. i have moved to treefern pots (3") with charcoal and sphagnum moss, as they were getting a bit dried up looking, especially the second one. i've brought them in for the winter again, south window, bright light.... the first one bloomed while sitting in my oncidium sharry baby, tucked between the bulbs, then again after i potted it up. the second bloom came from a tiny little growth that is still getting bigger. they are tricky little buggers.

Tolumnias are twig epiphytes that like to dry very quickly after watering but need moisture because they don't have pseudobulbs. In nature accomplish this by growing in a humid environment. I have mine mounted on a piece of tree fern so they dry within hours of being watered and I water them every other day or a least three times a week. They also require relatively bright light. Good luck.
