Default Texas and specifically Houston grower question.

So i grow most of my orchids outside in slatted baskets and some mounted under my arbor/pergola. Those of you growing your orchids in a similar environment, how often do you water. I installed an auto watering system but unsure how often to have it come on.

    Thanks,
    Miller

All my orchids that are in wood baskets and have pseudobulbs get watered once a week (if weather is cool) or twice a week (if the weather is warm) in the winter. In the summer I water them every other day or at least three times a week. The media I use doesn't hold much water (lava rock, cork, tree fern fiber chunks). If your use a media that holds more water, like sphagnum, you may want to wait longer between watering. If new pseudobulbs are plump, the orchid is OK, but if the new pseudobulbs show any wrinkling, they're not getting enough water.

Another consideration is rain. If it rains often in your area during the summer, you may not want your automatic watering system to come on very often. That's assuming that you're growing outdoors.

My basket and mounted orchids get watered 3 times a week from sprinkler in summer. If temp goes over 95, and I happen to be home, I hand water them in the late afternoon to cool them off.

Like us living in Equator at least twice a day morning and evening as you know the weather here only wet and hot and if raining season come consider bonus for us.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am currently watering twice a week. I think i will keep it at that until the heat really kicks in then may add an additional day.

    Thanks again!
