@ Starr the advice and expalnation given by Serama is good and sound. However, the photo of your plant in a pot, that pot does not look like a pot with a resevoir at the bottom. I am not sure which of the suggestion you are going to choose, so I am drawing this to your attention.
As for the clay pellets: as was pointed out before, there are several grades/sizes that can be had. I have used the 'rule of thumb' large roots large pellets. I use a fine grade pellet for Onc. and Milt. mixed with charcoal. This works for me in my conditions.

    Red face Thanks Angela

    Hi angela
Thanks so much for your response- I appreciate your observations. The plant was purchased from folks that sell the hydro supplies and orchids. here is a better picture of the botton of the pot. This is a better shot-does that look like the pots you arre familiar with?

I have a couple of vandas that are in vases right now and they look cool and are happy- but I am thinking ahead to vacation time and being gone a week. Those vase vandas won't do well without their daily drink..I may use this medium for them an also that kind of pot since they need to be dry between drinks.
Let me know what you think about the pot.
Barbados- wow! I'll bet your orchids love the climate there!

About 10 days ago I moved my onc Mendenhall Hildos into s/h. It met the requirements that it is in active root growth. I already have new roots reaching down into the leca. So I am encouraged that it will be happy in this media.

I think this is the way to go, potting-wise, with this type of orchid from what I have read. Another thread on this site has a lengthy discussion about the way this orchid blooms and blooms and blooms and blooms to the point it can bloom itself to death.

It is well worth reading if you have one of these.
