    Default Den. Shriveled Psuedobulb question

Hello everybody, I have a quick question...
I have a little Dendrobium Maiden Charlotte (aberrans x rhodostrictum is what I think it says on the label) anyways my question is (and please forgive the complete lack of correct terminology) whether or not the pseudobulbs, which begin to form about 2-2.5 inches above base of the plant, should ever begin to shrivel?
And another question that I have is whether pseudobulbs in general should ever shrivel...I'm thinking that this could be a symptom of me not watering them enough.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

Hi Ryan , It could be caused by either overwatering or under , most of the time it is from the plant staying to wet , can you tell a little more about where you have it , in the house or out, also what it is potted in and how often you water it . Gin

Hey Gin, I have it on a shelf, inside, under some fluorescent tubes. I probably water it twice a week (maybe a little less) usually with some fertilizer. I suspect that it is not receiving enough water. Other than the shriveling it looks pretty good, it has two new "pseudobulbs" that are still pretty plump, which is why I was wondering if they should stay in that plump state.
    Thanks
    Ryan

Dendrobium's young pbs should stay plump. What do you mean by "pbs which begin to form 2-2.5 inches above the base of the plant"? Do you mean to say that a new growth appeared on the cane? If that is the case, the new growth is a keiki.

It is normal for older canes to shrivel but only at a certain degree, too much shriveling means that your Den is dehydrating fast.

Ok, I finally got a picture of the plant I am talking about you can kind of see that two of the 'pseudobulbs' (is that what they are called) are shriveled and two are not, the two that are not are new growths. I hope you can tell what I am talking about.

I have a Dendrobium aberrans and from what I can tell on your plant, it seems like it does what the parents does.

The new growth grows and is round and as it slowly ages it also starts to show ribbing. Nothing to worry about. I would only worry if the ribbing gets too much and the plant starts to lose its leaves, but then this will happen on older pseudobulbs as well, ie pseudobulbs that are a couple of years old.

    cheers

Yes Ryan some Dens do get a texture to the canes as they grow. I coudln't see your pic, but I have a Den right now that as the cane mature get ribbed. If the roots look good and the plant is not getting limp and loosing all the leaves on new canes your good to go.
