    Exclamation Please !! help

To those among us who want to do the right thing ( and they should) by using the new names on their plants when posting; Please do us (the old stuck in the mud, like me) a favour by also putting in brackets the old name so that we can readily identify what the plant is.

    Thanking you in advance.

Since I don't know many of the new names anyway this should not be a problem Angela. By the way there are exceptions to the rule. That Oncostele Catante you viewed today use to of course be Oncidium Catante. I also do notice that some of the orchid vendors online don't keep up with the changes either. AL

I think anyone has to be on their toes to keep up with the changes ; I try, and my best way is to check the name on Orchidwiz before I post . This also makes sure I have it right !.

In the past, and from time to time, I have ranted about name changes ( hey, I'm an old man ; this is what old men are supposed to do - rant ! )

But as I may have said here , and I certainly said in an article I wrote for my Societys journal - if I told you the names of some of the six orchids in the "Beginners Collection of Orchids" I started with more than 50 years ago, you would not recognise any of them . Want to try ? They were Cyprepedium insigne ; Odontoglossum grande ; Odontoglossum bictoniense, Zygopetalum discolor. Now Paphiopedilum, Rossioglossum, Rhynchostele and Cochleanthes respectively. If I used the old names, who would understand me now ? Only the oldest of the old growers I think. So we do have to try and keep up - and including a 'translation' helps , as Angela suggests.

Instead of orchidwiz I always try to check the name in the "World Checklist of Selected Plant Families" hosted by KEW. The only botanical record kept of species. And for hybrides, I use "The International Orchid Register" at RHS, the only accepted registry for hybrids...

catatante can also be found for sale under odontocidium, colmonara and odontostele (and that last one might not even be a real orchid hybrid name, i've never heard of it otherwise. mine came with a tag reading oncidium. the part that really annoys me is that the traditional names helped me to identify that orchid's cultural needs and tolerances. now i just plain don't know anymore.
