This beauty was given to me over a year ago and unfortunately doesn't look like this anymore. I'm afraid I'm killing it.

Looks like a Phaius - Phaius tankervilleae, maybe.

Talking Thank you for your feedback. It will probably save this plant.

Well, I researched phaius tankervillae and found out it was potted in the wrong medium for over a year. Sphagnum moss. I was also surprised to find it can be used in gardens in south Florida which is where I am! For now, my plant is now in a mix of bark, perlite, charcoal and a small amount of moss.
Wow, I'm so glad I found this group.

Stateless, is that something special for orchids? I have a lot to learn about them. Do you think I should re-pot the Phaius right away or is it better to wait a bit since I just did it?

Phaius should do just fine in the bark/perlite/charcoal/moss mix, just adjust your watering to make sure it stays evenly moist but never soggy when in active growth, and a little drier in winter rest. Usually an easy grower if you make it even halfway happy.

no it's not something special, I just meant that I grow them in a free draining soil mix, I grow some Spathoglottis and a bamboo orchid. I use dirt from my yard mixed with some mulch material. I grow them in pots not in the ground.
