Default Orchids in clear pots with small cone in bottom

I read a discussion of phals in clear pots. I'm in the process of repotting many of my orchids (not phals) into clear pots with a small cone in the bottom. I'm hopeful it will help to keep the roots from being too wet in the middle and also enable me to see how the orchids are doing without having to take them out of the pots.

What experience do the members have with these pots? Anything you have learned would be helpful.

I use a variety of clear pots and like them because it allows me to see how the media is doing. Some of them do have a cone in the middle. I've not repotted them to see how they've done in comparison to others that do not have a cone. Usually if there is no cone something else is used in the middle instead like peanuts. So much depends on the media and other conditions.
In case you didn't know in general with clear pots after awhile algae can form. But I believe that is preventable with placing the clear pot in a solid one so it doesn't get light. I'm sure adding a fungicide when watering once in awhile could help prevent it too.

The algae doesn't hurt the plant though does it? Doesn't it just look bad? What do you do about algae?

No it shouldn't hurt it. Just a cosmetic issue. Aside from hiding the clear pot in another or using a small amount of fungicide when watering (i've not tried it) I THINK I also saw it mentioned here about using peroxide.

Thanks Nikki. That's what I thought. I will put them in fancy orchid pots when they're blooming and I bring them in the house.
