Yesterday our high here in Ky was 2 degrees F and the low was -5. We don't get this cold but once every 20 years or so. Nobody knows how to deal with it and they cancel school, etc. Today it will warm up to a balmy 12 degrees F!
We have the alarm, but it didn't get set to 'winter' this fall. We were both too preoccupied with work to remember to check it. That was the first thing I checked when I saw what happened.

    Thanks everyone for the concern.

Ah Bruce I have often wished after a bad incident such as what you've gone through that I could go back to before the event happened and do whatever it takes to avoid the worst from taking place. Keep in mind we cannot be prepared for every occurrence and this Arctic blast of air is hardly a usual winter phenomenon. Ya do the best you can and that's all you can do. If there's any way I can help you guys just let me know!! AL

Yesterday we had a "high" of -1F (not taking windchill into effect). Today we were forecast to reach 10-15f for a high, but never did check to see if we hit that mark. It was certainly "nippy" when I dug my car out today. (Thank heavens for my neighbors in the apt next door -- they had a shovel I could borrow.) Had about 8inches accumulated over my car and about 1ft deep between cars in the lot. Worst part was where the plow had piled up the snow in front of the cars as it passed. Currently have about 2ft of snow on the balcony. Can't remember the last time that happened. I know my folks upstate received far, far more snow than I did.

Man, that really stinks, Bruce. Hopefully you didn't loose anything extremely rare or cherished for sentimental reasons. In an attempt to look on the brighter side -- at least you didn't loose everything and with the new space freed up you'll have an excuse to try some new orchids ... "think of the possibilities!"

we've had lows in the low 40s. late at night. for a few hours. then 70s and 80s day temps. not bad, but i did bring the poor little yellow oncidium twinkle inside. it was getting burned leaves again. it's been very dry here. relatives in indiana are a bit snowed in and schools are closed. i really don't miss winter.

Well, I ventured back into the greenhouse today. So depressing. Most of the plants along the walls have turned mushy and dropped their leaves. About 200, probably more plants in all. Some of the vandas we've had for 20 years are dropping their leaves and have turned a sickly pale green-yellow color. The dendrobiums have all drooped and their leaves have just about all fallen off. The oncidiums look like dead, frost bit foliage - brown mush. Most of the large strap leaf paphs are sickly looking. The phals are all but dead (except for a couple mounted ones I had growing towards the center of the GH.) It is so depressing. The cold penetrated about three to four feet inside the walls of the greenhouse. The plants in the exact center seem to be alright, but almost all of the ones along the walls (leaning and growing against the side walls of the greenhouse) are dead or will be soon. I went out to water and check on things, saw the vandas and some of my favorite orchids from friends looking like death, and just turned around and walked back out.

Oh no! That's just so hard to face. I get sad to lose just one plant, can't imagine losing tons of them! I think my Wilsonara may have cold damage from sitting too close to the window when it was so cold here last month. The new growth next to the window is looking pretty sad. Even though its double paned and the plant isn't frosted, I'm pretty sure it suffered damage. Gosh, that just sucks for you and your plants!

We even got a bolt of it in central Florida. Lets just say I won't complain about the heat anymore. At least not until August .

that sucks, BD. i've always wondered about how people maintain a greenhouse in such a cold place. furnaces only seem to breakdown when it is absolutely freezing outside. and greenhouses don't seem that sturdily built to me.

That really sucks Bruce ! I understand why you walked away - I would have done the same thing in your place.
