Coeruleo, it is a very expensive proposition to maintain a greenhouse in a cold climate. I had something similar happen to me when I had a small greenhouse. When I left home for college, my dad agreed to take care of the orchids, which he did until we had a cold spell in mid-January and it went down to 15 below zero.
The heater would have done the job if it had been turned all the way up, but he didn't do it, and I lost everything. That put an end to my orchid growing for a number of years. But I was away at college and was really too busy to care very much. I didn't resume growing orchids until years later.

Here on the Sun Coast were down to 39 two nights, and all the orchids (around 30 now) came indoors on trays in front of the sliding glass doors. Gave me a chance to minutely inspect each one again, trying to figure out what ails them. They have new spikes, new roots, new leaves and yet look as if something is either sucking on them or there's a fungus amungus. Time to spray again, Volck Oil and copper. Anyone know if there's a reason not to mix them and spray just once?

Bruce, that must be devastating...I have family in the nursery business in an area where hard freezes are rare, and cold nights are always a vigil. Last night we were able to carry all the orchids outside on the protected lanai because temps went into the 60s...
