This is a Phrag. Eric Young (Longilolium "Waunakee' x besseae 'Cow Hollow II' FCC/AOS) in bloom for the first time with me (it is a mature plant). These are pictures of the second flower on the spike, the first flower was quite normal and very nice, now this second one comes along and the bloom on it is a freak. It does not have any petals, other than the upper sepal; it looks like the lower sepal has enlarged itself to replace the petals making it much larger than it should be.

I got to know, is this something wrong with its health or is it a genetic thing, or what? Has anyone seen this before?

    Welcome Howard,

Others on this board will probably have a more complete answer, but here is what my experience with this is.

Sometimes phrags, for whatever reason, have a deformed bloom. The next bloom, next blooming cycle -not on the same spike, should be fine. We have had several do this. Usually it is the first bloom on the plant, but we have had the second bloom cycle start or end with a deformed bloom.

Just keep growing the plant. The next bloom should be fine.

    Cheers!

It is not uncommon for Paphs and Phrags to have a weird bloom, especially on a first blooming. If the first blossom was okay, I wouldn't worry. They are prone to little blips in the flower production, especially early on.

Thank You, makes me feel better to know that this is not that unusual.
