Default Does any one use Superthrive?

I recently got an email advertising Superthrive. I've seen it for sale at boxstore, but I wanted to see if it was worth buying or just a gimmic. Also, what are your thoughts on fish emulsion? boxstore has that to, deodored (or so it says!) Which is best? Or is neither worth bothering with?

    hi, lisa!

i believe superthrive (with its hormones and vitamins) is used by growers to get roots going (say, before a re-pot). dont go crazy with this stuff (especially with plants with spikes) because ive read that the flowers can turn out deformed.

just a a couple of drops/gal and let the plant soak for 1-2 hours in the solution.

i use it myself (because there was a half-used bottle around the house) but i dont know if it actually makes a difference or not (because ive never not used it before repotting).

as for the fish, i use that too as a foliar spray about twice a month (i also spray the medium a little). my boyfriend always complains about the smell because we dont have the deodorized stuff. i think my plants like it.

nothings dead yet, but who knows, that could change.

if i were only to buy one thing, it would probably be the superthrive, though im hard pressed to say why...

Lisa, I think the fish emulsion is great stuff. What brand is your boxstore carrying? My understanding was that the Alaska fertilizer company had gone out of business, but that might have been a wholesaler just trying to get people to buy something else...

Can't speak for the superthrive; have never used it.

I've used ST but not fish emulsion. I like ST for repotting--something like 1 tsp/gallon (but don't quote me). A long time ago I used way too much ST way too often, and got some horribly crippled flowers. That was also the first and only time I've bloomed my Paph. Delrosi--it was hideous. Now I still use ST occasionally, but like 1 drop per gallon every couple weeks, as an additive to my usual fertilizer. I don't know if that helps, but I have it, so I use it when I remember.

Dyna-Gro KLN has a bunch of hormones, whereas ST only has 1 or 2 if I recall correctly. All of the hormone(s) in ST are also in KLN.

Superthrive like any other fert has it's purpose. it is a rooting hormone. Schultz also makes a product that I hear is just as good. I use a Superthrive mix to jumpstart my imported rootless orchids. it works well. About once a year I will fertilize with it. what happens when you overfet with it is the plant will store the acid and you will get deformed blooms. mainly in Paphs and Phrags but other orchids will also be effected.

I have used fish emulsion (both deodorized and regular) for over 14 years. Although, I have a GH and do not have to endure the smell for very long. the thing about fish emulsion is that you really can't overfertilize. A former local nursery and I dumped the stuff directly on a few genera and the only negative result was mold.

The Alaska brand of fish emulsion is still available in every store around here. Good stuff.

Thanks guys, that helped. I think I'll pick up the fish emulson and skip the superthrive for now. Louis, I'll let you know the brand and name.

I appreciate all your help in making my decision!
