I'm sure you could break the thing and toss the entire mess into a larger pot, but you run the risk of damaging some of the roots (which will rot in short order and hasten the breakdown of the new mix). I'd just break the pot, remove all damaged roots, and let the catt make new ones into the new pot. Done at the right time, it's less of a shock to the plant than the gory scene would suggest.
