Default Must be orchid root not shoot?

Was at at pet store and saw these clearance mini noid phals. They have already bloomed but this one had I think decent roots and so I picked it up. I figure I will be surprised with the color of the bloom. I have ordered a new pot and some mini phal media. I watered it when I took it home and fertilized it. The media is moss and bone dry. I thought this was an aerial root but why is it growing straight up. It is growing out of the media so it can't be a new shoot right?View Picture (1296 x 968 pixels) @PicResize.com

    Hello Traci-
That looks like a root to me. Just let it grow and go where it wants. I try to get it wet when I water or mist. And fertilize it too after watering it first.

That's definitely a root even though it's growing upwards, probably desperate to find some water given your description of the media being bone dry! Good on you for rescuing it! I'm sure it will flourish with your care...

Thank you 78terp and eeyore for the advice. I have wet and fertilized it and the root so hopefully it will stay moist for awhile. My humidity is fluctuating between 55-70% and my temps around 80. Hopefully my new media will be in before the end of the week and I can repot it. I've decided to use a mix of extra small Monterrey bark, New Zealand fine petal spaghnum, turface MVP and rice hulls. Hopefully it will be happy in that. I for some reason couldn't pass it up. That green root just said take me home like its hand was up waiting to be called on. I'm at three orchids now (I know not many) and with the orchid show at the end of the week I think I will have number four.

Remember when you re-pot that you don't want to suffocate the roots. They need to breathe.

Thank you. I will repot very lightly not packed in.
