    Default Tarp for winter protection.

I have a tarp which is just being used to protect from the sun. When i bought it I was told it could also help keep the greenhouse warmer. The tarp does not cover the entire greenhouse and has 50% protections. If so, does the tarp have to cover all four side? Please reply with your thoughts>

If you cover the greenhouse with a tarp, there will be no solar warming of the structure, and your plants will die from a lack of light.

If, on the other hand, you're really referring to shade cloth, most people remove them in the winter, as the intensity of the sunlight is reduced.

I'm sorry Ray, I meant shade cloth. I was told by the seller of the shade cloth that it could help insulate and thus help keep the greenhouse warmer. Not so much?

Is it a mesh, or a tinted, solid piece of material? If mesh, it will do very little to help hold heat.

if its the greyish silver type, Aluminet, it will help keep things a bit warmer in winter and a bit cooler in summer, I no longer use it but saved it to wrap plants that are too big to bring in to my porch

Its the silver reflecting shade cloth 50% purchased from the Gothic website. I guess from the above responses I should not use it unless the winter sun is too bright. I have not had a greenhouse type set up during this season.

I experience similar temperatures over Winter (just below freezing with the occasional to -6C) and my orchids do well with a simple 50% shade tarp. Of course, that depends on what varieties you grow - my vandas go to the coast over Winter but everything else does fairly well. My phals come indoors.
