Yeah, I've had orchids since I was in college... for about 35 years or so, I had the white Phal we used for wedding flowers, lost it a couple of years back and I still miss it. They are the mainstay of my collection because they are tough enough to handle drought and a lack of humidity once well established. During that time I have had periods where the orchids weren't very important to me, but have always had a couple of them. I remember having a spare bedroom with several shortly after I got married. I studied to be a florist in college, mainly just because I love plants and flowers! I dropped out finally to get married and learned to groom dogs, which I have done for about 40 years now. So, its not so much a driving addiction to me, but just a part of my life. My dad studied Botany in college, it runs in the family. We always had house plants, though now in his late 80's he's happy with a thriving vegetable garden! I've found that I can "do" Paphs too and have trouble with Oncidiums and their alliance (though many of those i really like). My Cats are generally doing very well, but the one window with enough light for them is full up. Bummer, they are one of my favorites! Anyways, so much for rambling.

I do not (yet) have as many phals as you do, but for the 15 or so that I have, 10 are outside (six mounted on various trees) and open to the elements. They all get watered from above regularly when it rains day or night (we are still in our Florida rainy season) and also when I water. I have not problem with crown rot. Sometimes when I water, I may wipe or blow the excess water from the leaves/crown; otherwise they are on their own and doing fine.

Do you use Physan? It helps to prevent rot.

Arrange several in a closed-bottom tray but with holes at the sides close to the bottom. Water them from the top in a sink (you can use a small watering can) and you can tilt the tray to drain off the excess water before returning them to the growing area.

M-in-M, a mounted phalaenopsis tend to grow in an orientation that allows easy crown drainage. In a pot, we arrange them vertically, making it easier for the trapped water to stay in place.

I water everything heavily, soaking the daylights out of them with a watering wand or from an overhead "rain" system. However, I have fans moving the air around (breeze, not wind) 24/7, and I water early enough in the day that there's lots of time for them to dry before nightfall.

Ive never used Physan as ive never had rot problems to treat. Ive never heard of using physan just to prevent rot that may or may not occur, sounds a bit counter intuitive, and a waste of money since Physan is quite expensive.

Li, I actually just started doing the tray method you describe with a dozen parvi seedlings and it does work quite well! Thanks!

Thank you Ray ive been trying to water in the early morning and sticking to it, i used to cheat alot and water very carefully in the mid afternoon or evening and always worried when the lights went out if i would wake crown rot, or spots on a leaf. Now if i cant water early i just skip it entirely and water the next day. Ive also adjusted my fans to be blowing 24/7 rather then just when the lights are on. Im happy with the results!
