Smile Vacation Results- 10 days no water

I have just finished my first watering of my collection since I returned from visiting family back in Southern Maryland. I ate a bunch of local seafood while there. Maryland Lump Crab Cakes as often as I could. Yum!

10 days away with no care at all for the orchids. I set 2 mounted, water loving orchids up with a reservoir of water for some of the time. Both survived well. All other orchids were watered well the day before departure. I set my thermostat at 61 F, closed all my blinds on windows with orchids by them. And turned off all the artificial lighting.

When I got home yesterday afternoon, it was too late to water most so I watered those who could take it. And watered everyone again this morning.

Several flowers are going to have a shorter duration. My Paph American Beauty is losing one of the 2 blooms already. I think due to the dry spell. Several phals have wilted flowers too.

I think I only lost 2 spikes. My most advanced Cymbidium spike and my latest Neofinetia hybrid spike seem to be done. And done in the bad way.

My 85 year old mother seems to have taken a turn for the worse in the last couple of days. We got her to agree to assisted living finally. But it may be too late. I hope she recovers but, if not, she will be finished with the COPD/Emphysema that wracks her 24/7.

Hey Harvey! I hope you enjoyed your trip! You know living in Florida and having my orchids outside, I didn't realize all the planning and preparation that goes into growing orchids indoors. You are truly committed to your beautiful collection and passion! I wish all the best for your mom - I know it must be difficult to know she suffers. Take care and looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful orchids.

It sounds as though your plants didn't fare too badly considering the change in their schedules. And vacation is at least as important as the lost flower here and there. At least to me!

I have this funny lifestyle where my orchids are outdoors at my Florida residence, but I am gone for four months over the summer. During that time they are on their own under the shade of a big live oak tree. I have come to realize that most of them thrive quite nicely in the rain, without me, over the summer. When I return they are glad to see me and appreciate being fertilized, and they save most of their blooms for when I am home. We have this understanding.

Of course, those that don't thrive under these conditions aren't around long! ha

    Harvey,
I am glad that most of your plants survived.
I am sorry to hear about your Mother. My Mom also has pretty severe COPD/emphysema and I know the toll it takes on both her and the family.

Thanks for the update, Harvey. Your orchids seem to be in good condition - I wonder what other plants , except cacti, could survive under those conditions. So sorry to hear about your mom but I think that assisted living is the best for her now.
