First of all, my phal. plant leaves are green (front and underside). Could someone tell me why the new leaf growth is discolored purplish red, especially on the underside ?

The two new leaves on my Phal are also purple underneath, but it seems to be healthy. Maybe it's normal for new leaves?

Some of my Phals have red on the new leaves at the base, usually Phals that have a red or purple color in the blossoms. I would think it is caused by light levels, but I am not sure. It is not a problem, the leaves should green up as they grow.

No prob! You guys guessed it. Many (but not all) Phals have purple coloration in their new leaves. It fades to green over time. They're perfectly fine!

    Default Phal. Question

Thanks everyone. I've been reading the postings and learning a lot from everyone for sometime now, but reluctant to join in because I was really intimidated by everyone's expertise in the subject matter.

My interest in orchids started in May 2004. At first, I thought it was just a passing phase but now looking back, the orchids have taken over the whole kitchen area, my master bathroom, and any area with lights seeping through.

Already making plans for a greenhouse this summer.

Like an addiction, I just cannot stop buying these plants.

And then... I realize it's like religion. You don't ever question why, you just do.

    Welcome Trung!

Don't be intimidated - we make up answers half the time! LOL!

It's more like an addiction than religion. I've never felt the desire to go to church every day!

welcome Trung!!! I hope other people who read this post and who have not joined in because they felt 'shy' will realize that all are welcome here. beginners, pros, and the slightly silly (that would be me, Julie, Gin and Tim) this is a place to have fun, learn and make new contacts in the orchid world. I've been growing orchids off and on for 30 years, and I learn new things here all the time. They even talked me into trying to grow dendrobiums!!

Yeah, Diane started when she was 2!

I object! I'm not slightly silly. And you forgot Hoa - our dear, giggling Speedo King. He's definitely slightly silly.

I used to be shy you know. Before I started hanging out with you people...
