    Default Smoke?

I have a neighbor who lately has purchased one of those outdoor campfire/bonfire type containers for having a "safe outdoor fire in. So, now they're having fires like, every night. I know cigarette smoke is bad for orchids, but how about general wood smoke? Should I be carefull to keep all doors and windows closed when they light up? It is soooo beautiful here tonight I have everything wide open but I am now getting worried about the chids! LOL, she (the neighbor) also smoked and when I had everyone out watering this morning she came by to admire. And was smoking! I think my eyes got really big and I almost said "sorry, could you not smoke around the plants please?" but, she was gone in just a minute so I don't think they were harmed too much.

    Probably worrying too much again....

You should have kicked her butt, how dare she smokes around your babies!

Seriously, outdoors with only one person smoking, I don't think much damage was done to your orchids except that she polluted the environment.

Hmm, not a smoker, eh Pete? LOL! We've already established I am not the kick butt type of girl, despite my super hero identity!

Seriously tho - what about this outdoor campfire thing? Should I lockdown the house when this is going on?

I don't know the answer because I have never been in that situation. I don't know if it's harmful to your orchids but what about you? I don't think you would want to smell all that in your house, do you? If i were you, I would close all the windows so the smoke doesn't enter the house and bother me.

I would just play it by ear (or nose as it were). If the smoke starts to come into your house en mass, then I would say something. It is not fair that you should have to live all locked up because someone else wants to have a bonfire all the time, orchids or no. If it were me and the neighbor was having the occasional fire (read once or twice a month) then no biggy, but everynight, if it was filling my house with smoke we would have words for sure. just my .02

    Thank you, Pete!

I have to admit I *love* the smell of woodsmoke, but not at the expense of my little babies!

You are probably right and incidentally (tho I am grilling so in and out) I closed up half an hour ago.

Would still be interested in knowing the answer to this if anyone knows. Is it a tobacco thing or a smoke in general issue? Anyone? Anyone???

I've heard rumor and "theories" (euphemisms for "BS") that tobacco smoke *can* spread tobacco mosaic virus or the like. I have *not* read any case reports of that happening. Now, that said, I would kill anyone who smoked in front of my orchids not because of any potential harm to them, but because that stuff is just vile to me. (But I am not making a judgment.)

Sorry, thanks Forrest too, we must have been posting at the same time.

Jason, I agree completely about the cigarettte smoke. I was more concerned about this bonfire thing. This is the third night this week, so I think it is going to be an ongoing thing. I think I'll just close up, for now, and keep a watch. It sucks tho (sorry) it is very lovely here and breezy and I always like the extra airflow. Luckily, plants are in the front of the house and smoke in the back.

    Thanks y'all!

H, smoke, the gas given off by ripening fruit, and the fumes from the burning of natural & LP gas will all make orchid buds blast, especially in a confined space. When your neighbors are bonfiring, yeah, close up the house. As Forrest said, it might be worth having a talk with em if they're doing it that frequently.

Thanks everyone! Will do...that's right, I forgot I'd heard that about ethylene. Makes sense that the buds would blast. I haven't had any trouble so far w/ blasting and I'd rather keep it that way!
