    Default Humidity Trays

    Hi everyone,

Forrest posted a question about humidifiers recently that got me thinking about my own humidity conditions in my growing area. So I wanted to ask, does anyone else use humidity trays or just simply place water in a saucer under the pots? Does this have any positive effects on your plants? Thanks!

I use copper humidity trays under many of my pots. The catts are in one, and the mottled leaf paphs I just set up in one yesterday. Oh, and two others are in a round one. I also have some plants where the pot sits in a larger cache pot and I use those little glass marble things (the ones w/ the flat bottoms that Pier 1 sells) and put a teeny bit of water in the outer pot, not so much that the inner pot touches or sits in the water.
My humidity, depending on the day, is anywhere from 40-70%. If it is a really moist day, sometimes a little higher. Lowest I've had was 25% in the winter, but that was a rare occurance.

humidity trays or the gravel-rock-water thing increase humidity very slightly near the plants--maybe 5-10%. I used the ones with grids for convenience--excess water drains into the tray. Grouping plants together, as us orchid addicts tend to do, also increases local humidity.

I have some of all. I have wire shelves with plastic trays. I have terracotta saucers turned upside down. My plants sit on top of those with rocks and water surrounding. Then in front of my windows on the floor, I have large plastic planters with the "grid" plastic over top. When I water, it just drips into the planter. I monitor my humidity with this cool digital toy I found at Lowes, so when I get lower than I want, I crank up my humidifers! Am I anal? Yes, I am....
