    Hello Phalspital,
What a clever idea! I also like to reuse things. I have saved my onion bags, I know I can reuse them. You are lucky to still be in So. Fl. I was born and raised in Hialeah, yes Hialeah,
I was blessed to have grown up in the 50's and 60's, so I saw the best of it. Your orchids are beautiful! So is your pool! If you have access to coconuts, open them but....save the outside fiber . Orchids grow so well in them. Just wrap them around the roots. I have a dend. in one. LOVES it. If I could get some up here you bet I would. They will not grow here. Also NO ONE sells whole coconuts.
    Thanks for sharing your pics.

And here is everyone a year later, all grown into the palm trunk. If I move I'll have to chop down the tree LOL.

That looks wonderful. I am trying for a similar effect but the darn palm keeps shedding fronds and breaking off the spikes! Grrrr

Lynda, what kind of palms do you have? I loved my Adonidias (Christmas palms), but they grew too tall for the screen, so I replaced them with slower-growing pygmy dates. Both are "clean" palms, but I can see if you didn't keep an eye on them, they could shed the odd frond down onto the spikes.

Thanks, Karen...the pool was built by a lunatic/genius who has a show on Animal Planet. I know about coconut fiber; just can't get my act together to get some so I use sphagnum and fern bark. The only dend I have is the aggregatum--all the rest are phals or muscular catts.

    Default Type of wood

Sarah: The type of wood used to mount orchids can make a big difference to the success of your project. For instance I'd suggest not using driftwood or any branches grown near the sea. The wood can be quite salt laden and this wont be good for your plants. We have had excellent success with madrone or madrona (spelling depends on where you live). It is a member of the mesquite family; very hard, few to no bugs, little oil and no smell. We stay away from cedar or fir or any type of pressure treated wood. Hope this is helpful.
