    Default Ma Belle

So, I finally have bloomed (well, almost) my first paph...Paph 'Ma Belle). The bloom is about to open. Meanwhile, the capsul from the first bloom is still hanging in there.

Nice job, Aaron! Parvis and Brachys aren't the easiest Paphs to grow. And Ma Belle has such a lovely flower!

    Julie,
What makes them harder to grow? I've been lusting after a particular Parvisepalum cross - how would I need to treat it different from my Cory and Coch crosses?

the hybrids are much easier to grow than the species (and perhaps more importantly much easier to BLOOM too). your typical Ma Belle doesn't need any special treatment, except maybe a little crushed oyster shell in the mix. some of the species are much more temperamental.

Be careful of fertilizer - they don't like it! I've badly burned my Parvi primary hybrids, where my other Paphs took no note. Also in repotting, handle the roots with extra care. They break off for no reason. I hate repotting them, because I lose so many roots even being careful.

    Those are my biggest issues.

yes, julie hit it on the head--beware of brittle roots, especially on things like bellatulum, godefroyae, even niveum I've snapped roots off unawares. overfertilization is an even bigger problem if you tend to grow them "drier".
