Thank you! Yes, I belong to that group. I just wanted to know what the expert orchid growers thought about this way of growing orchids. Most of them have only tried it for a few weeks or months.

I think on this forum not that many people who grow orchids this way. Its very similar to semi-hydro on which Ray is an expert. You can check his website gor explanation in details. Its all depends on our overall vonditions and the plant itself i think. I tried semihydro and in my environment it did not work even with new roots starting. But avocado trees (i have two) are doing just fine. Its in same room/shelf as phals, for some it work for some not.
You have to keep it n ne media atleast for few months before you can say if method works. That's why its important to start when roots are in active growth.

makes me a bit dubious. i shall see what happens with ones i have started as it wont matter if it doesnt work with them. all the posts i see are from american or asian growers whose climate is far removed from the British climate. thank you for your info. certainly helps. will investigate the water culture page on facebook and see if i can find out more.

I am actually too afraid to try this method long term. I have attempted a semi- hydro but I find for myself ANY time I change the media that the plant was originally in, it leads to a dying off of the roots that the plant had in that media since they were adapted to it. New roots eventually do grow, but I am not too fond of the idea of letting roots die off to adjust to a new media. It is just a personal choice with me and some may do very well with it.

That, my dear, if a "fact of life". The absolute best thing you can do is find the culture technique that is best for you, using the pots and potting materials you favor for your conditions, and repot into those same materials well before the medium starts to decompose. That way, your plants' roots will essentially be in the "same" environment forever.

Steven Male, a commercial grower in the Harrisburg PA area, repots 100% of his plants annually, so there is little-, to no readjustment needed, and his plants are spectacular!

"...well, I'm still out to find someone here who has tried this technique long term, where this is one of my older phals, maybe one or two year by now..." went the goblin hoping these two pictures were self explanatory, before adding "...with phals it's easy for me, I use tap water, I let the water go stagnant, and then I leave the plant well alone, there is no salt build up, and no rotting roots, no insects, no aftercare really beyond watering occasionally to retain the same water level...", in fact, at the point the goblin was looking to find other orchids that would be this simple, smiling "...apart from phals, are there any other orchids that can live well upon stagnant water..."

about a year to date, where the roots when I started were only a few in number then, ah but today not only are they many but also upon diving into the stagnant green water those roots have branched out like a tree, plus on closer observation the phal has fully wedged itself hard to its container too, no I would say that it's one happy self sustaining phal by the looks of things
