I've heard bad things about it mainly because of the water running off of the house and into it. Something about the tars and stuff on the shingles could potentially harm your plants by getting into the water. Who knows?

You have to remember that i live in the UK , we don,t use shingles , mostly slate or concrete tiles so no tar.
Perhaps this is the reason why "water butts" are not so popular in the US.

It's ok...I'll forgive you for living in the UK. :P Just messing. Hm...wonder why you don't use shingles? I mean if a hail storm hits, couldn't the roof suffer damage? Even if there's a little crack does that mean that the whole roof has to be redone? Sorry, never heard that you don't have shingles. I guess you forget how big the world is and how different it is other places. I mean, I know sometimes I just assume that every place is just like America and in reality they are totally different.

Default Back to the original question

of preventing algae and slime. I collect my RO water in a 55-gallon plastic drum. The plastice is thick and has a top that fits tight. Since no sunlight gets to the water I haven't had any algae or slime growing in the water. I've been running the setup for four years. Maybe you just need to apply a few coats of paint to the rain butt to keep the sun light out.
