    Default woohoooo for my brassia!!!

For months now I've been closely watching my very favorite orchid, my Brassia Rex "Tahoma". This was the first orchid that I ever made a "serious investment" in (aka....over fifty bucks) and when I bought it, I declared that if I could get this one to grow and rebloom, my orchid hobby would no longer be futile. Well, it survived my repot about 11 months ago, and the plant itself has literally doubled in size since I bought it. But no spikes. So I fed it monthly and watered it carefully and prayed and sang enchantments and burned sage around its aura. No spikes. Then, last night, after several cocktails, I was lazily stirring my martini with a toothpick and walking through my orchids when i spotted the greatest thing ever.....A SPIKE ON MY BIG GIRL. And it isn't just a little thing, it's a real, honest to god spike that has been growing for a while. How did I miss it. i mean, I look at this plant every day! It was facing the window and hiding from me. Ha! Gotcha!

Some of you might remember the pics of the blooms from this plant last year. They are enormous. The blooms were easily 14 inches from bow to stern. I hope they return that impressively. I'll keep you updated.

This is officially my sixth earned spike on an orchid. How many do I have to earn before I get a coffee mug or a keyring or something?

Here are some pics of my favorite phal that is also in spike. she's just a NOID, but she is so faithful, and I love the way she sits in her basket, overlooking the rest of my not-so-well behaved orchids. And then here's another angle on my Brassia spike. I love the look of this plant in a basket too. I'm goo goo for baskets.

Congrats, Kitty! Although, it's a little early for Brassias. Mine usually bloom in June. Guess your guy was in a hurry to show you how much he appreciated the pampering you gave him!

By the way, as Brassias go size-wise, yours is only just warming up!

Wow---that's great. I love the baskets too---recently started hanging mine in the windows. I hope my brassia throws a surprise spike for me (it's quadrupled in size since I got it last year, and I'm hoping for one this summer)
    Good job!
