I now swear by s/h and this fertilizer that I got. All of my plants have gotten some now and all of a sudden I have roots popping out everywhere!

I do still have to worry though that the new roots will rot if the hit older parts of the plant. I had to keep the old bulbs attached to grow the new one and though I cut off everything I could, I couldn't rid of the rhizome itself, if you know what I mean, so I hope they can bypass the icky areas and make it down farther ok!

Btw, I got the plant in bloom in January and I'm sure it had root problems to start. But the new growth really jumped into high gear with the s/h, which was at the end of June.

Hmm, after all that and it is pulling through? Maybe I should give oncid's a try after all.

Well, this is my second go and though the other one didn't make it, it did hold on extremely long with NO roots, but a couple pseudobulbs. The problem last time was that I kept losing the new roots, I think that is working much better now though!

I just had to really fight the urge to water. And using non-degradable media helps - I can mist new roots with rotting the media.

That looks really healthy now! The new roots look vigorous.

Well, I wouldn't quite go THAT far! They haven't really gone down very far into the media to anchor yet and I did lose a couple little one while I was on vacation (I think because they weren't misted), so there is still a long road, but now I think we might actually make it!

Update: Things are really taking off now - this is only a month later now and already I have a nice fat pseudobulb and lots more roots.

It may not be blooming anytime soon, but it is really rewarding to watch its progress!

I was just reading through this after seeing cjcorners sweet sugar and noted that I was hesistant to use s/h on this weak a plant....

Ironically, this is the plant that seems to like my s/h the most! In fact, another, stronger plant just gave up on s/h - the comparison is interesting. I think it is partly due to the container. Thicker plastic seems to insulate too much and cause too much condensation. This pot it is very thin plastic and doesn't get condensation. (and unfortunately I have no idea where to get more of the good one)
