Label/Tag Protocol?
When is it considererd ok to switch to your own? I imagine maybe one should hold on to the originals, but what if I wanted to show something, would I need backup through the years? I am trying to lable my plants in an inconspicuous way, but also don't want to be questioned on their legitimacy, and yet, I often receive hand written tags on both seedlings and divs, or no tag at all, but the name, often awarded in some way I might wish to count in the future! So, what is the protocol on this?

A lot of folks write their own and just bury the original down into the pot if they want to remember where they got the plant. As long as you copy the info correctly (which is not to say that the original labels are always correct... ahem...) go ahead and use your own. They're just as valid.

Not only that, but if you have a plant without a clonal epithet on it yet, you can even name it: Paph. Riki Tiki Tavi 'Heather's Mongoose', for example....

I've always wondered about that myself, so what I do
is take the nursery tag out, recopy to tag and put it in the pot. I save my original tags w/nursery information in a ziplock bag.

I actually set up a nice new accordian file last night by vendor, so now have a safe place to keep the tags, should I choose to remove them. Most I left in, but one of the vendors I bought the catts from has awful messy writing and the tags are really large, compared to the plants! Lol, such a perfectionist!
