Well, it seems my luck changed today! I went by a box store expecting to see the same sickly phals with wrinkled leaves and brown sticks of what were once spikes, but God said "Let there be orchids"! And there were. Many, many, beautiful, exotic orchids. Cattleyas, Miltonias, Dendrobiums, Brassias...everything under the sun, in every color imaginable. They even had the first Vanda I'd ever seen...cute little compact thing with yellow flowers. I was too afraid to buy it though, I know I wouldn't be able to care for it properly. I did however escape with an Eppicattleya Rene Marques and what I believe to be a dendrobium...it was labled as a Catt. but I'm positive it's not. Anyway, all the plants I saw were in bloom/bud and had extremely healthy roots and leaves. I must've just caught the shipment! It was such a great day

You escaped with even more orchids?!?! I smelled troubles brewing ...
Totally kidding! Enjoy your new plants! Those guys should do well in Texas's climate.
    Cheers. Hoa.

Glad you found the shipment day, and I hope you didn't break the bank too much.

I just wanted to second everyone's advice, and add in my two pennies worth. I have just been given two phals by girls at work (yesterday) bought from the supermarket, and they were both potted purely in sphag. I didn't bring them home from work as the pub and tube are not the nicest environments for travelling orchids so I am taking bark into work to repot them on Monday. Sometimes we win when we peek in our new orchid pots and find them perfectly potted, usually it's an it will do for now media, but othertimes we totally lose, and find out new phals have been potted in the worst thin possible.

Maybe, your ill-luck with previous phals has been down to them being sat in the wrong media for too long before you can do anything about it for them. And I am sure that you will find your ideal watering schedule soon, and become an orchid guru for your friends!

Hmm... as to your purchasing troubles... Have you thought about trying one of those prepaid VISA cards? I think they sell them at some fairly common locations...

And congrats on the non-phal finds!

And, if you keep up to date with your payments it's a great way to build you credit too.

Yes... and then get a card with a nice fat credit limit... and max it buying more orchids.
