Actually, Germany is worse in the "how early can we start marketing Christmas" race. Surprised me too. But then I remembered that there just aren't any big holidays between now and then. Oct. 3rd is Reunification Day, but it's not commercial and people aren't really into it. And Halloween is only just starting to gain momentum. PLus, no Thanksgiving. Ergo, Christmas is all people can think about starting in September. Makes summer end so quickly.

hcubed, last winter I kind of forgot about my orchids and watered them when I had an attack of conscience that I had forgotten them for weeks. I have seen lots of posts on the web that talk about winter watering schedules being on a monthly basis, so don't fret!

Well, you could try my approach--have enough orchids so you can't begin to keep them watered anyway! Make them beg for attention.

Well, you can tell I've spent far too little time outside of the US. Never occurred to me that Halloween might be more of a north American "thing"

Oh wow, Halloween? It is steadily being pushed on us more and more - kind of in the same way that greetings cards companies make up days for every relative you could possibly have... like Step-cousin's day. I think shops just want to pile more junk on us!

I get in some sweets, but mainly because round in my flats there are quite a lot of young children whose parent's might pop round, it's certainly nothing like you see on American tv programmes (don't know if that is the reality either??)

I LOVE Halloween! And miss it! I think is has a slightly skewed reputation outside of the USA, since I don't really think of it exclusively as "sweets". Though of course when you are a kid that's a big part of it. I likes the costumes and running around at night in the fall when the air itself is spooky. Not to mention carving pumpkins, etc.

In Germany the big costume-day is around Mardi Gras (Karneval or Fasching) - especially in the area to the west people get really into it and go crazy for at least a week!

    I love Halloween, too.

One thing that always ruined it back in Michigan were the people who were more interested in celebrating chaos on devil's night (night before) and would go smash everyone else's pumpkins, egging, toilet papering, smashing mailboxes, start fires, increase in shootings ... ok, so the last two issues were concentrated more around the Detroit area... but still, why ruin it?
