Default Just bought a Vanda...oh lord.

So I went to a big box today and lo and behold, vanda bag babies. Could I resist? I think not. I got myself a huge (for a bag baby lol) kagawara kultana...should be bright hot pink (or red, if you're colorblind like the people who make the tags.). I can't help but think "what have I gotten myself into?" lol Vandas frighten me. They're weird and break common orchid rules. Direct sun. Watering everyday. No potting media. They just don't get it...silly plants. I hope I can get it to flower! Wish me luck!

...Great. That's it. It stays outside, with the doors locked.

I have a couple in 4" wooden baskets with some orchid bark. They get sun from sun up to mid morning. They seem very happy. Root tips are green. I find with the bark, I only have to water every other day. Unfortunately with the slates, I also have to pick up bark every 2 days also. LOL

Direct sun in our neck of the wood will burn strap-leafed vandas, Kelly.

You do want to shade them..especially in mid-day...especially as hot as it has been this September-October...it's been as hot as our June/July this year!!! Amazing..

When our humidity drops really low..you need to water that critter twice a day if outside. It's really hard to keep them happy inside over the winter without supplemental lighting...

Good luck with your Vanda. I have 1 Ascocenda that so far is doing well. I am so confused about lighting.

I'd better practise the Expecto Patronum spell... a giant silver mealy bug appears and the vandas quickly retreat to their baskets.
