    Question Dendrobium I.D.

Hi, Yesterday I purchased a Dendrobuim at my favorite nursery at a rock bottom price which looked very healthy. Of course, there were no flowers left and I suppose that is why it was on sale. Can you HELP? Tag has
DA 578 512 HT printed on it. I have done many Google searches but to no avail. I do hope someone can tell me what it is or tell me where to go on the web to find out. Any help would certainly be appreciated. This is my very first Dendrobium and still a novice on orchids. Janagolf

Update ! I was able to contact the supplier/grower in Hawaii who told me the name of this Den: Compactum x den cheudhai. It is a clone from Thailand that they got back in 2005 and is identified as DA 578. It should bloom next summer/fall. That is all I could find out !!!! So, I really have a long wait to find out what the flower looks like and also the color unless one of you experts can kindly help me out ??? Thank you ! Janet

I am not a dend expert by any stretch of the imagination, but there are so many crosses out there that unless someone just happens to have the same plant, it isn't very likely that anyone will know.

Sorry--I know that isn't the news you were hoping for. Most of us have plants with no identification and no amount of "expertise" will help you find out the cross. You are actually very lucky to have found out the cross from the vendor--so best advice I can give you is to keep watering and look forward to it blooming next year. Orchids help us all develop a little patience--they just don't understand that we want them to bloom NOW!

When I end up with a plant with no i.d., I get inventive and make up a cool sounding name....for example there's Phal (noid) Big Yellow and Phal (noid) Purple Flea. Obviously the first is named because it's got big huge yellow flowers, the second was bought at a flea market and has the prettiest purple and white flowers.

Thanks Sadie and Connie ! I really appreciate your replies. Believe me, it is taking a lot of patience. I now have the three noids: 2 phals (1 very healthy and the one I adopted and still looks a little sickly) and the den. Hopefully I/we can figure out what they are when they bloom. I purchased the Ortho's All About Orchids book last week and, of course, spotted the orchid table. Bought 2 Oncidiums: Everglades Elegance -"Nancy Lee" and Gower Ramsey "Dancing Doll". Wow, I have 2 orchids with color. Actually, they were the best of the lot having several spikes and buds and they still have them and blooms opening up. They are small & busy little blooms ! I think I would like to buy a catt one day as I do like the blooms from only seeing them in pictures. Will have to read up on them to see if my conditions are okay.

Again, ladies, thank you ! Am trying to hang in there just-a waiting patiently and, if worse comes to worse, I'll just have to come up with some cute names.

Den compactum will give you the purple-magenta of Den phalaenopsis, and the other cross is either misspelled, or too recent for me to find any info on it.

    Good luck with it!

Thanks you, McJulie, for your efforts and reply ! It was very considerate for you to try to help me. Guess I will just have to wait, and wait, and wait to see what I really have.
