Traci, Peter has some of the most gorgeous phrags. I'm sure other wonderful plants as well, but the pics he's posted of his phrags are forever stamped in my mind.

John, I think Pete uses 430W. (hope you don't mind me answering - I was here anyway.)[/QUOTE]

Nope - not at all. Thanks Heather. I'm running 500 watts so I guess I'm good for awhile. Barring the orchid fairy conjuring up another room to expand into....

I know, he is an awesome grower. I'm just so torn as to which lamp to but, I should say which system, HPS or MH. It seems like as of now, HPS is in my favor. I just worry that they will get 'leggy' looking. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much.

Heather, if you were going to buy a system, what would you buy? I'm so torn over using HPS or MH. I want a system that I will be able to use for a pretty wide range of orchids.

That's the one I'll go with, I'm pretty sure. The HPS for $255. I'm hoping to get B-day/Xmas contributions! I have some other issues to deal with tho (carpeting, and the fact I cannot, in my current location, hang anything from the ceiling.) I won't be living in the space, so don't mind the red spectrum, also I've seen what this does for plants in my zone, so I'm pretty set on it. I actually have a MH setup, but am pretty much convinced I'd rather have more of the blooming action from the HPS. JMHO!

How high is a good question.

My HPS light system should arrive next week.I have a hanging kit that allows
you to change the height very simply & quickly.I have a light meter as well so it looks like i,ve got a good project for next couple of weeks. Also ordered a 10m(about 35 foot ) roll of Mylar reflective sheeting to line the "grow room" with.

Traci, I don't know if you noticed, but that site also sells conversion bulbs so you can go from HPS to MH when you want.

Cool, thanks - I definitely see this as something I could add to over time (ie - couldn't use a light mover w/ this, but at least there is more light!) Not that pricey, either.

I realised early this year that i needed a growroom to keep a lot of my 'chids happy during the winter & instead of a holiday i bought the equipment for the growroom.I also realised that i,d spent more on the growroom than i had on 'chids but a couple of minutes with Mr Plastic & i,ve sorted that as well
